In a pivotal move to bolster defense relations, Australia and Japan have formalized a substantial agreement valued at AU$10 billion (around US$7 billion) for the provision of state-of-the-art warships. This development represents Japan’s most significant military export contract since it lifted its arms export bans in 2014.
The agreement was signed by Richard Marles, Australia’s Defence Minister, alongside his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi. Both officials reiterated their commitment to overseeing the efficient implementation of this warship program while reinforcing strategic defense relations.
As part of the agreement, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will construct three enhanced multi-mission frigates in Japan, with construction set to commence in 2029. Furthermore, eight additional frigates will be built within Australia, supporting local manufacturing and enhancing defense capabilities.
The Japanese Ministry of Defence has welcomed this agreement, describing it as a landmark development in bilateral engagement and indicative of the deepening security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
This agreement aligns with Australia’s expansive defense strategy, which aims to elevate military expenditure to 3% of GDP by 2033, an increase from the current estimate of roughly 2%. This strategy underscores Australia's goal to enhance its maritime strength and address emerging security dynamics in the region.
