Adolf Hitler Uunona Poised for Reelection in Namibia's Local Governance

Post by : Raina Nasser

In Namibia, politician Adolf Hitler Uunona is gearing up for potential reelection in his local constituency. At 59, Uunona has been representing Ompundja in the Oshana region since 2004 and is affiliated with the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) party. His name, despite its association with the infamous German dictator, has not hindered his local popularity.

Uunona has consistently affirmed that he wants nothing to do with Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader linked to the Holocaust. He attributes his name to his father’s choice, insisting that it does not mirror his personal beliefs or values. He mentioned to both local and international media that he only discovered Hitler's historical significance later in life.

In most public settings, Uunona tends to omit “Hitler” when introducing himself; even his wife calls him simply “Adolf.” He has no intentions of changing his legal name, which is used in all official documentation.

Due to Namibia's history as a German colony, names like Adolf are not uncommon. Uunona remains politically vibrant, having won the 2020 election with an impressive 85 percent of the votes. Despite the peculiarities of his name, his focus remains steadfast on enhancing his community while distancing himself from Nazi Germany’s dark history.

Notably, incidents such as a vehicle spotted in his area displaying “Adolf Hitler” alongside a Nazi swastika have not tarnished his reputation; he firmly maintains that he is detached from such symbolism. Uunona’s situation illustrates how a controversial name does not determine one’s character or dedication to public service in Namibia.
