Following his election victory, New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has announced his intention to take up residence in Gracie Mansion, the iconic home of New York mayors, thereby departing from the rent-stabilized apartment that became a focal point of his campaign.
Since its establishment in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the adopted home for most mayors of New York City post-World War II. Despite this tradition, Mamdani, who emphasized affordable housing during his run, previously withheld from confirming his decision to live there after the November election.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mamdani clarified his reasons for the relocation, stressing family security and the necessity to prioritize the affordable housing agenda that resonated with voters.
By moving into this secure and official residence, he aims to allocate more focus and effort towards tackling the city’s housing issues.
Mamdani has been residing in Astoria, Queens—an area celebrated for its vibrant immigrant communities and eclectic dining scene.
“To Astoria: thank you for showcasing the true essence of New York City,” he remarked, noting that the community will continue to influence his governance.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his marquee promise of freezing rents in New York City to his own experiences living in a rent-regulated apartment.
However, his opponents, particularly former Governor Andrew Cuomo, scrutinized him for persisting in the apartment despite hailing from a prominent family. His mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated film director, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a distinguished professor at Columbia University.
It is worth noting that not every former mayor opted to live in Gracie Mansion.
For example, Michael Bloomberg chose to remain in his Upper East Side townhouse throughout his three terms and primarily utilized Gracie Mansion for public engagements and major renovations.
As Mamdani prepares to transition into the mansion ahead of his January 1 inauguration, he will encounter a significantly different living environment from his previous Astoria home.
With its gentle yellow façade, green shutters, white railings, and breathtaking views of the East River, Gracie Mansion is recognized as one of New York’s most enchanting historic residences.
The interior, particularly the lower level, reflects the Federal design typical of the late 18th century.
The property features five bedrooms along with advanced security provisions for the mayor's family.
There have even been claims by past occupants that the house is haunted, with Chirlane McCray, spouse of ex-mayor Bill de Blasio, recounting instances such as doors opening mysteriously.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams also affirmed in 2022, “There are ghosts in there, man.”
Mamdani’s current residence is rent-stabilized, which implies that the city imposes strict limitations on annual rent hikes.
His current rent is approximately $2,300 monthly, while the typical rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City has soared to about $3,500, according to Zillow.
This significant disparity emphasizes the importance of rent-stabilized units for numerous residents grappling with the rising living costs in the city.
As he approaches his inauguration, Mamdani's transition to Gracie Mansion symbolizes both personal evolution and a pivotal political statement, placing him at the forefront of New York’s ongoing discourse surrounding affordable housing, rent control, and surging living expenses.
