Resignation of Zohran Mamdani's Appointee Due to Past Social Media Controversy

New York City: A senior appointee selected by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has resigned following the resurfacing of antisemitic posts from her past. The resignation of the Zohran Mamdani appointee was officially reported on December 19, 2025.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, appointed just this week to Mamdani’s administration, stepped down after social media posts she made over a decade ago became widely discussed. The posts, from 2011 and 2012, were highlighted and circulated by the Anti-Defamation League.

Controversial Social Media Posts Surface

Mamdani’s office noted that the posts contained language that perpetuated harmful antisemitic stereotypes, generating significant backlash from Jewish communities. The resurfacing of these posts has intensified scrutiny on the incoming administration.

In her public statement, Da Costa expressed profound regret over her words, insisting they do not represent her current views and acknowledging the pain they caused.

“As a mother of Jewish children, I am filled with remorse for the distress my previous remarks have caused,” she stated.

Intended Role within the Administration

Da Costa was set to lead the Office of Appointments, tasked with overseeing talent recruitment and shaping the mayor-elect's administration.

With a decade of past experience in the mayor's office, she has held senior roles in a private communications firm and at Sotheby’s lately, as per officials.

Despite her qualifications, the revelation of her past posts led to an immediate resignation of the Zohran Mamdani appointee.

Mamdani Approves of the Resignation

Zohran Mamdani confirmed the acceptance of Da Costa’s resignation after she conveyed remorse over her earlier statements.

“She recognized the injury caused by her words and opted to withdraw. I supported her choice,” Mamdani expressed through a spokesperson.

Following the resignation, the Anti-Defamation League refrained from further comments but previously shared screenshots of three posts they deemed antisemitic.

Heightened Political Scrutiny

In the wake of Mamdani’s election, various advocacy groups signaled plans to meticulously observe his policy decisions and staffing choices, particularly due to his outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Mamdani has faced ongoing inquiries about whether his political perspectives verge on antisemitism, especially given his past reluctance to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada.” He has since stated his disapproval of the phrase.

As he gears up to assume office next month, the resignation of the Zohran Mamdani appointee is a significant event, as he aims to assure the public of an inclusive administration.

A Crucial Moment for Mamdani as He Takes Office

This scenario underscores the challenges Mamdani faces while constructing his leadership team amid rigorous public and political oversight. The incident has ignited conversations about accountability, past online behavior, and the standards expected of public officials.

As his inauguration approaches, the resignation of the Zohran Mamdani appointee will likely influence broader discussions surrounding leadership integrity and public trust.
