Zelensky Ousts Chief Aide Yermak Amid Corruption Investigation

Post by : Raina Nasser

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially removed Andriy Yermak, his chief aide, in the wake of a dramatic corruption investigation that saw officials raid Yermak’s residence. This decision marks a notable shift in Kyiv's political landscape amidst the ongoing war and increasing pressures from both military conflicts and diplomatic fronts.

The dismissal poses significant challenges for Zelensky, particularly as Ukraine faces a renewed Russian offensive in its eastern territory. The timing coincides with a controversial peace proposal from the United States, which many in Ukraine perceive as favoring Moscow.

Just a week prior, Yermak had been entrusted with significant responsibilities, including overseeing negotiations regarding the U.S. proposal. However, on Friday, Zelensky announced via a video address that the presidential office would undergo reorganization, revealing that Yermak had submitted his resignation, which was immediately accepted through a formal decree.

The National Anti-Corruption Agency, along with the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed that Yermak's residence had been searched earlier in the day. Though specifics of the inquiry remain undisclosed, reports indicate that Yermak is cooperating with authorities. He has previously been connected to an alleged $100-million kickback scheme related to Ukraine’s energy sector—an issue that has heightened public dissatisfaction amid ongoing Russian assaults on the nation's power infrastructure.

As Ukraine grapples with power outages, heating deficits, and pressing winter difficulties, the corruption scandal exacerbates anxiety among its citizens. In his address, Zelensky urged national unity, cautioning that division could jeopardize Ukraine’s future.

Discussions to identify Yermak’s successor will commence on Saturday. During this interim, Ukraine's military and diplomatic forces will take the lead in negotiations with the United States. Anticipated visits include U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll arriving in Kyiv soon, as well as President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff heading to Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin.

Yermak has been perceived as one of Zelensky's most loyal allies, despite criticism for monopolizing access to the president and influencing major policy decisions. Prior to his political involvement in 2019, Yermak had a career as a film producer and copyright lawyer, ultimately gaining a reputation as a key figure in Ukraine often dubbed the unofficial “vice-president.”

Despite his prominence, public sentiment towards Yermak is largely negative, with a Razumkov Centre survey from March 2025 indicating that nearly two-thirds of Ukrainians distrust him. Analysts speculate that his exit may enhance Kyiv's negotiating stance with the U.S. during this critical period.

European Union officials have voiced support for Ukraine’s anti-corruption efforts, commending them for their independence. This follows earlier attempts by Zelensky to limit the agencies' autonomy, a strategy he later rescinded in response to widespread protests and EU pressure.

Throughout the war, Yermak and Zelensky have worked closely together, often sharing meals and engaging in strategic discussions in the presidential bunker. However, at this pivotal juncture, both military and diplomatic blunders could carry serious repercussions for Ukraine.

Zelensky reiterated the importance of resilience, emphasizing that Russia is poised to exploit any weaknesses in Ukraine, pledging that the nation will not succumb to the pitfalls that Moscow anticipates.
