Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities conducted a search on Friday at the home of Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, intensifying political tensions in Kyiv. Yermak, who leads Ukraine’s negotiating team for a U.S.-backed peace plan, confirmed the search and said he is fully cooperating with authorities.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, together with the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, said the search was “authorised” and linked to an ongoing investigation. Earlier this month, the agencies launched a major inquiry into an alleged $100 million kickback scheme at Ukraine’s state atomic energy company. This probe has implicated former senior officials and an ex-business partner of Zelenskiy.
Although Yermak is not formally a suspect, opposition politicians and some members of Zelenskiy’s own party have questioned his position. The European Solidarity party criticized his role in the peace negotiations, calling on Zelenskiy to engage in transparent discussions with all political parties rather than limiting communication to his own faction.
Yermak, 54, has been a close ally of Zelenskiy since before the president’s 2019 campaign. He has been instrumental in guiding Kyiv’s negotiating stance amid intense pressure from Washington and the broader international community to reach a peace agreement with Russia. The leaked U.S. draft plan reportedly favors Russian demands, prompting concern in Kyiv over possible concessions.
The political stakes are high as Russian forces continue their advance along multiple parts of the front line. Moscow has indicated that capturing the eastern city of Pokrovsk could be its largest gain in nearly two years. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the U.S. peace plan could serve as a framework for future agreements, demanding Ukrainian troop withdrawals from eastern territories before any cessation of fighting.
Yermak has publicly resisted any suggestions of territorial concessions, telling The Atlantic magazine that “no one should count on us giving up territory.” Political analysts in Kyiv suggest that the searches could force Zelenskiy to reconsider Yermak’s position, describing the situation as a significant test for the chief of staff.
The search highlights the growing domestic pressures Zelenskiy faces amid wartime challenges, balancing anti-corruption expectations with the complexities of international diplomacy. With the peace negotiations and ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Yermak’s fate could have major implications for both the political stability of Kyiv and the broader war effort.
In summary, the search of Andriy Yermak’s home underscores the delicate balance Ukraine must maintain between domestic accountability and international negotiations, as Kyiv faces escalating pressure over a potential peace deal with Russia.
