Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday that current negotiations with the United States and European allies are approaching a potential breakthrough, sparking cautious optimism about resolving the nearly four-year conflict with Russia.
Speaking to a group of Ukrainian diplomats, Zelenskiy described the discussions as “very close to a real result,” emphasizing the collaborative effort between Kyiv and Washington, highlighted by strong engagement from European partners.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagements
The discussions are spearheaded by senior Ukrainian official Rustem Umerov, who has participated in multiple high-level meetings with US and European representatives in Florida over the past days.
Simultaneously, Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, representing President Putin, has been in separate talks with American officials at the same venue.
Both Ukrainian and Russian officials have confirmed their teams are returning home Monday to report on the advancements made.
20-Point Proposal from the US
Zelenskiy indicated that the discussions have focused on a 20-point peace plan proposed by US diplomats. This framework has been debated for several weeks, particularly following criticism from Ukrainian and European leaders regarding an earlier version that seemed disproportionately favorable to Moscow.
“The situation isn’t perfect; nevertheless, the plan has substance,” Zelenskiy noted, admitting that compromises are being evaluated while emphasizing the importance of established boundaries for both sides.
The negotiations are also tackling long-term security assurances for Ukraine, directed at averting further Russian military action post-conflict. In addition to security issues, discussions include strategies for Ukraine’s economic recovery and reconstruction after the war.
Zelenskiy commented, “The foundational elements of all documents are prepared. However, there are certain stipulations we cannot accept, and I believe the Russians feel the same about their own terms.”
Ongoing Pressure on Russia Crucial
The US negotiations are being guided by President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
In his latest video address, Zelenskiy highlighted the critical question of whether Washington can elicit a genuine response from Moscow and confirm their willingness to shift from ongoing aggression.
He reiterated the importance of enduring international pressure on the Kremlin, advocating for stronger sanctions and strategies to limit Russia's oil revenues.
“Reducing Russian oil prices, stringent global sanctions, and persistent pressure are necessary to influence even the most stubborn parties,” Zelenskiy stated, pointing out that substantial measures have been enacted this year to decrease funding for Russia’s military initiatives.
Although no final agreement has been declared, Kyiv's remarks hint that the diplomatic process has entered a pivotal phase, as all involved parties are assessing whether this current momentum can lead to sustainable peace.
