Three-Year-Old Indian Chess Prodigy Breaks Records as Youngest Rated Player

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a remarkable feat, a three-year-old chess prodigy from India is making waves in the chess community. Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha, born in 2022, has officially become the youngest rated chess player in the world, achieving a rapid chess rating of 1,572.

In a competitive spirit, Sarwagya vanquished several older challengers, some in their twenties, as well as participants competing alongside grandmasters. This outstanding accomplishment complies with FIDE's regulations, which stipulate that a player must earn points against five rated players in sanctioned events.

Originating from Madhya Pradesh, Sarwagya began his chess journey at the young age of two-and-a-half. His father, Siddharth Singh, remarked, “We could see his capacity for quick learning. Within just a week, he could correctly identify all chess pieces.”

Sarwagya’s distinctive qualities—patience, focus, and determination—set him apart from his peers. He dedicates four to five hours a day to practice, including an hour at a chess training center. His coach, Nitin Chaurasiya, describes Sarwagya as both fearless and quick-witted on the board. Early training sessions were often tearful but soon transitioned to a rewarding system involving candies for correct moves.

To provide context, former world champion Magnus Carlsen began playing chess at the age of five, while Gukesh D, the youngest grandmaster to date, started at seven. Sarwagya's early achievements suggest a brilliant future ahead, further accentuating the rising profile of Indian chess talent from Madhya Pradesh.

Chess experts contend that Sarwagya’s record is not merely a personal milestone; it symbolizes India's growing prominence in the international chess arena. His exemplary talent and commitment mark him as a prodigy to keep an eye on in the years to come.
