Majority of Young Americans Say Climate Concerns Shape Their Views on Having Children

Post by : Raina Nasser

A 2024 Lancet analysis shows a rising number of young Americans are re-evaluating plans for parenthood because of climate change. Surveying people aged 16 to 25, researchers reported that 52% said they felt reluctant to have children, citing worries about the planet’s long-term prospects and the environmental costs of raising offspring.

The issue goes beyond individual welfare to encompass broader ethical responsibilities. "Some people think it’s a bad thing not to have a child," said 27-year-old Amanda Porretto, adding that she questions the need to add more people when pressing environmental challenges remain. Many respondents described a tension between the desire to become parents and the push to reduce carbon emissions.

Specialists in bioethics point out that reproducing carries what they term a substantial "carbon legacy." Travis Rieder of Johns Hopkins University noted that bringing a child into the world creates a lifetime of emissions that can affect future generations. The disparity in per-capita emissions is stark: the United States emits roughly 123 times more carbon per person than nations such as Ghana.

The hesitation is reflected in broader research. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates adults under 50 who do not have children are four times more likely to let climate concerns influence their reproductive choices than older adults. Environmental organizations also warn that choosing to become a parent remains among the most carbon-intensive life decisions.

At the same time, experts including Rieder and Nandita Bajaj of Population Balance urge a balanced view that weighs carbon reduction efforts against the deep social and emotional value of raising children. Many Americans are exploring compromises—such as having fewer children or adopting more sustainable household practices—to align family life with environmental responsibility.

This trend points to a generational shift in how ecological risk factors into major life choices. For younger Americans, the calculation is evolving from simply whether to have children to how to parent responsibly in a warming world.
