Yesavage’s 12-Strikeout Mastery Leaves Blue Jays One Win From World Series

The Toronto Blue Jays moved to the brink of a championship, taking a 3-2 lead in the 2025 World Series after a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night. The result puts Toronto one game away from ending a 32-year title drought.

Twenty-two-year-old rookie Trey Yesavage delivered a historic outing on the mound, finishing seven strong innings while recording 12 strikeouts and issuing no walks. His line established a new rookie benchmark for strikeouts in a World Series game and marked the first time any pitcher produced at least 12 Ks with zero walks in a Fall Classic contest.

Toronto struck immediately. Davis Schneider homered on the first pitch of the game, and two pitches later Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a solo shot to left, handing the Blue Jays an instant 2-0 lead and seizing early momentum.

The Dodgers managed only one run, a third-inning solo blast by Enrique Hernandez that trimmed the deficit to 2-1. Los Angeles’ offense has struggled throughout the series, producing just four runs across the past 29 innings against Toronto’s pitching staff.

Shohei Ohtani, who had been a driving force earlier in the World Series, failed to contribute in Game 5, going 0-for-4 and dropping to 0-for-7 over the last two games after an earlier hot streak.

Toronto continued to capitalize on both timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. In the fourth, a misplay by Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez allowed Daulton Varsho to advance to a triple, and Ernie Clement’s sacrifice fly extended the Blue Jays’ advantage to 3-1.

The seventh inning produced another decisive sequence for Toronto. With two runners aboard following Blake Snell’s departure, a wild pitch and an RBI single from Bo Bichette pushed the score to 5-1 and further dented Los Angeles’ comeback hopes.

Blake Snell’s start was undermined by control issues despite solid strikeout numbers; he surrendered five runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings and walked four batters, providing Toronto additional opportunities to score.

After Yesavage exited following seven dominant frames, the Blue Jays’ relief team closed the door. Seranthony Domínguez and Jeff Hoffman each recorded scoreless innings to finish the game and preserve the lead.

The victory hands Toronto home-field advantage for the remaining games of the best-of-seven series and places the Blue Jays one win away from their first World Series crown since 1993.

Los Angeles now faces the difficult task of winning both remaining contests to secure the title. Manager Dave Roberts will need to rally his roster and address the lineup’s recent scoring drought to keep the Dodgers’ championship bid alive.

Game 6 shifts to Toronto on Friday, a pivotal matchup that will determine if the Blue Jays can close out the series in front of their home crowd or if the Dodgers can stave off elimination and force a decisive Game 7.

Yesavage’s performance has drawn widespread attention and immediate historical context. His seven-inning, 12-strikeout outing not only swung momentum to Toronto but also announced the arrival of a young pitcher capable of performing on the sport’s biggest stage.

If the Blue Jays secure one more victory in Toronto, Yesavage’s Game 5 start will be remembered as the defining display that helped propel them to a long-awaited championship.
