The Colorado Rockies have confirmed the promotion of Warren Schaeffer to the position of full-time manager, following his interim tenure that began in May. This decision comes on the heels of the team's challenging start, which led to the departure of Bud Black after a disappointing 7-33 record early in the season. Black, noted as the most successful manager in Rockies' history, faced a difficult season that prompted a leadership change.
With a final record of 43-119, the Rockies finished at the bottom of the NL West. Despite these setbacks, Schaeffer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue steering the team. His primary focus is fostering a positive environment centered around accountability, teamwork, and continuous progress. He emphasized the players' commitment to competing effectively and his desire to cultivate unity and trust, aiming to restore fan pride in the team.
At 40, Schaeffer becomes the franchise’s eighth full-time manager and has been part of the Rockies organization for over a decade, giving him deep insight into its culture and values. Rockies' President of Baseball Operations, Paul DePodesta, commended Schaeffer’s rapport with players and his vibrant approach to coaching, expressing confidence in his leadership capabilities.
Former manager Bud Black was instrumental in leading the Rockies to postseason appearances in 2017 and 2018. However, since those playoff runs, the team has struggled to find winning form. Black’s contract, which was set to expire at season's end, was extended for one additional year last October. Throughout his nine-season tenure with Colorado, Black recorded 544-690.
Schaeffer's promotion is part of a broader strategy to revamp the Rockies, coinciding with DePodesta's hiring earlier this month. Previously associated with the NFL's Cleveland Browns, DePodesta is celebrated for his analytical approach to sports, ever since his work inspired the film “Moneyball.”
DePodesta has nearly two decades of MLB experience and is the first executive to lead five different teams to division titles, including the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He steps in as the Rockies navigate post-Bill Schmidt’s departure.
The Rockies are optimistic that these significant changes, including Schaeffer's ascension and DePodesta's expertise, will revitalize the team. They are now the first MLB team to record three consecutive seasons with 100 losses since the Houston Astros did from 2011 to 2013. With this new leadership in place, Colorado aims to lay a more robust foundation for a competitive future.
Amid these transitions, the Rockies believe they have secured the right personnel to embark on a prolonged rebuilding journey. Schaeffer’s management and DePodesta’s insights are expected to bring the desired stability, guiding the Rockies toward gradual improvement in upcoming seasons. With renewed dedication to culture, effort, and development, the organization looks forward to a revitalized beginning and a brighter outlook.
