Just two days prior to the ODI in Ranchi, Virat Kohli took to the practice field to acclimatize himself to the pitch. Even with a wealth of experience from over 300 ODIs across 17 years, Kohli approaches every match with immense concentration. He shared, “If I am arriving somewhere, I arrive at 120 percent.” His intense practice sessions reflected his unwavering dedication to the sport.
In the inaugural ODI, Kohli tallied 135 runs off 120 deliveries, marking his 83rd international century and 52nd in ODIs. This remarkable feat surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in a single format, achieved in merely 294 innings compared to Tendulkar's 451. The crowd in Ranchi erupted in celebration as they witnessed his signature style reemerge on the field.
Kohli's preparation emphasizes a holistic approach, balancing physical conditioning, mental acuity, and situational awareness. Upon arriving in Ranchi, he practiced diligently during various times throughout the day and took a day off before the match for recovery. His mental strategy includes visualizing potential game scenarios, which helps him maintain confidence and composure on the pitch, even after prolonged periods away from international play.
Throughout his innings, Kohli adjusted seamlessly to the pitch's decline and managed breaks, including a moment when a fan invaded the field. His output included seven sixes and eleven boundaries, allowing India to set a total of 349 runs and win by a margin of 17. He emphasized the importance of enjoying the game and relying on his instinct, which enables him to perform consistently.
Kohli advocates for a balanced approach in his preparation, prioritizing fitness and instinct over excessive pre-match strategy. He dedicates one to two hours in the nets, ensuring his physical condition is top-notch. This regimen equips him to maintain sharp reflexes and excel in matches. Former player Dale Steyn noted Kohli's unwavering training in London, commending his exceptional fitness and mental resilience.
Although Kohli now participates solely in ODIs, his influence in Indian cricket remains profound. His century in Ranchi demonstrated that his competitive edge, strategic clarity, and methodologies are as potent as ever. At the age of 37, he continues to be a formidable force in India’s white-ball cricket, consistently delivering game-winning performances. His experience and focus ensure he remains a pivotal player for years to come.
