Vietnam and the Philippines have committed to advancing their economic collaboration, with leaders emphasizing the need for stronger bilateral relations. This commitment was reaffirmed at the Vietnam-Philippines Business Forum in Manila, coinciding with General Secretary and President To Lam’s official visit to the Philippines.
The forum convened a diverse group of government officials, business leaders, and representatives from both nations. Addressing attendees, General Secretary To Lam and Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. highlighted the critical role of enhanced economic cooperation amid shifting global economic landscapes and evolving regional supply chains.
President Marcos Jr. recognized Vietnam as a vital partner in trade, investment, technology, and food security for the Philippines. He reflected on the strong bond built over nearly fifty years, underpinned by mutual goals of economic development, regional stability, and increased integration within Southeast Asia. The approaching 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026 adds significance to their collaboration.
President To Lam noted the continuous growth in bilateral cooperation since the inception of the Strategic Partnership in 2015, with relations broadening across sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, education, defense, and cultural exchanges. Both nations announced an upgrade to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership during this visit, marking a new phase in their collaboration.
To Lam emphasized that economic cooperation should transcend mere trade volume increases, focusing instead on quality and sustainable value creation. He urged businesses from both sides to forge partnerships in agriculture, fisheries, food processing, logistics, consumer products, digital commerce, innovation, and clean energy. He advocated for enhanced collaboration aimed at creating resilient regional supply chains to navigate global economic challenges.
The importance of boosting mutual investment and promoting joint ventures for shared benefits was also stressed by President To Lam. He mentioned that Vietnam is enhancing its investment climate through transparent regulations, infrastructure improvements, logistics enhancements, and workforce development, making it more attractive for international investors.
The forum also saw key advancements to improve connectivity and economic exchanges. Vietjet unveiled a new direct flight connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Cebu, a crucial economic and tourism hub in the Philippines. Furthermore, businesses from both countries signed cooperation agreements in areas such as energy, tourism, aviation, technology, digital transformation, and industrial development. These initiatives are projected to bolster economic ties and foster sustainable growth for both nations in the coming years.
