Veteran North Korean Statesman Kim Yong Nam Dies at 97

State media on Tuesday confirmed the death of Kim Yong Nam, a long-serving North Korean diplomat and former nominal head of state, who was 97.

Officials said Kim died on Monday from multiple organ failure. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited his bier in Pyongyang on Tuesday to express condolences; the funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Kim occupied the post of President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly — the formal title often described as the country’s head of state — from 1998 until April 2019. Despite the ceremonial designation, ultimate authority has rested with the Kim family since the state’s founding.

Throughout successive administrations, Kim was a prominent face of continuity, serving under Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un. He frequently represented the regime at major diplomatic occasions, known for his measured, ideologically framed addresses.

In February 2018 he headed a North Korean delegation to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, accompanying Kim Yo Jong. That visit was one of the highest-level DPRK engagements in the South in recent years.

Kim’s diplomatic record included a 15-year tenure as foreign minister beginning in 1983. He helped maintain ties with countries in Africa, the Middle East and members of the Non-Aligned Movement during periods of increasing international isolation.

Born in Pyongyang, Kim was educated at Kim Il Sung University and later at Moscow State University, becoming proficient in Russian and versed in international affairs.

Observers have described Kim as a model bureaucrat whose loyalty and institutional skill allowed him to survive internal political shifts. Notable moments in his career include reading the elegy at Kim Il Sung’s 1994 funeral and proposing Kim Jong Il’s elevation to the National Defence Commission.

With his passing, analysts say North Korea loses one of its most consistent and disciplined long-term officials, marking the close of a notable chapter in the country’s political history.
