At 45, seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will compete at the Auckland Classic in January after receiving a tournament wild card. The event runs from January 5 to 11 as players prepare for the Australian Open.
Williams returned to competitive action at the US Open in August following a 16-month absence. Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin lauded her physical condition and on-court form, noting her standing among the sport's elite and her wider contributions beyond match results.
Lamperin emphasised Williams's role in shaping modern women’s tennis, saying she has inspired younger players through her sustained commitment and competitive spirit.
Williams previously lifted the Auckland title in 2015, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Her career also includes five Wimbledon singles crowns, two US Open victories and an Olympic singles gold from Sydney 2000.
Lamperin called her participation a notable addition to the field and encouraged spectators to see one of the game’s most influential figures in action.
Japan’s four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka has likewise been confirmed on the tournament entry list.
With the Australian Open commencing in Melbourne on January 18, the Auckland Classic is positioned as an important preparatory tournament for leading players.
