Venezuela Pauses Inquiry Amid US Strike Backlash

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Monday, Venezuela’s National Assembly unexpectedly postponed a crucial session that was meant to address the formation of a commission for investigating the lethal US military strikes targeting vessels linked to drug trafficking. The rescheduling was made without an explanation, and the discussion has been shifted to Tuesday, the regular meeting day of the Assembly.

The session had sparked considerable anticipation following weeks of escalating discontent regarding US military actions in both the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Since September, US forces have executed at least 21 strikes against alleged drug boats, resulting in the deaths of over 80 individuals, as Washington heightens its military footprint in the area. Families of several casualties have vocally sought accountability, asserting that many of the deceased did not have verified criminal ties.

Tensions heightened after President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had conversed with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Two individuals who are familiar with the developments indicated that Trump was poised to meet with senior advisers to reassess the situation in Venezuela, further adding to the geopolitical complexity of the issue.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, who acts as Maduro’s chief negotiator with the US, revealed the special session after discussions with the families of the deceased. He mentioned that the aim was to advocate for the affected families and foster a national reaction to the strikes. This investigation initiative arises from a Washington Post article alleging that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered troops to “kill everyone aboard” during at least one operation in September.

With the Assembly’s discussion now on hold, the political climate remains charged as both the government and the populace anticipate further information regarding the proposed investigation's extent and purpose. The situation continues to elicit strong public reactions throughout the nation, particularly among coastal communities most impacted by these maritime military actions.
