Venezuela Revokes Flight Rights for Six Airlines Amid US Tensions

Post by : Saif Nasser

Venezuela has revoked the operating rights of six major international airlines, escalating tensions with the United States and further reducing air connectivity to the country. The move affects Iberia, TAP, Avianca, Latam Colombia, Turkish Airlines, and Gol.

The airlines had suspended flights to Venezuela after a warning from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about a “potentially hazardous situation” in Venezuelan airspace. The FAA cited a worsening security situation and heightened military activity in and around the country.

In response, Caracas said the affected airlines had “joined actions of state terrorism promoted by the United States” by halting flights without government approval. Venezuela also stated that the U.S. regulator has no authority over its airspace.

President Nicolas Maduro has repeatedly criticized U.S. military presence in the Caribbean. The U.S. has deployed forces to the region, citing concerns about Venezuela’s alleged role in drug trafficking. Maduro has denied these accusations, calling them part of a U.S. effort to remove him from power.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had given airlines a 48-hour deadline to resume flights, warning that failure to do so could result in the loss of their rights to operate in Venezuela. Many carriers ignored the deadline, prompting Caracas to act.

Several airlines, including Iberia, stated they wish to resume operations once full safety conditions are ensured. Air Europa and Plus Ultra also suspended flights but did not have their permits revoked. Some carriers, like Copa and Wingo, continue to operate, along with domestic flights to Colombia, Panama, and Curaçao.

The revocation of these airline permits adds to Venezuela’s growing isolation and travel difficulties. It also highlights the increasing tension between Caracas and Washington, with potential economic and political consequences for both international carriers and Venezuelan passengers.

As the situation unfolds, travelers and airlines are left navigating uncertainty over air travel safety and international relations in the region.
