The Utah Mammoth aim to halt the momentum of New York Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer when they face off this Friday in Salt Lake City.
The Islanders arrive for the matchup on a high, boasting a three-game winning streak that includes a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday. Jean-Gabriel Pageau clinched the victory with a short-handed goal just over three minutes into overtime, marking New York’s second consecutive win in extra time.
Conversely, the Mammoth broke a three-game losing streak with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at home on Wednesday, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit with four goals in the third period.
Schaefer’s Ascending Career
Rookie Matthew Schaefer, the first overall draft pick, continues to shine. He contributed a goal and an assist in New York's victory over Vegas, bringing his total to 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 17 outings. This impressive performance positions him third all-time for 18-year-old defensemen, tying with Ray Bourque and trailing only Phil Housley.
“We certainly didn’t give up,” Schaefer remarked. “We started on a high note. We played well, and Sorokin made some crucial saves. A goalie like that is a significant asset for us.”
Islanders’ Collective Strength
Mathew Barzal netted the equalizer with just 2:37 left in regulation. Emil Heineman also scored, and Bo Horvat extended his streak to seven games with two assists. Goalie Ilya Sorokin stopped 26 shots, including three critical ones in overtime. David Rittich, holding a 3-2-0 record with a 3.41 goals-against average this season, is set to start for the Islanders.
Mammoth Show Promise at Home
In the victory against Buffalo, JJ Peterka, Nick Schmaltz, and Clayton Keller each registered a goal and an assist, while Karel Vejmelka notched 17 saves. The Mammoth showcased a collective effort with 11 players contributing to the scoreboard and four defensemen aiding in a total of 37 points from the back line this season.
“We’ve focused heavily on being more proactive and pushing pucks toward the center,” said defenseman Nick DeSimone, who scored his first goal of the season. “Our goal is to reward forwards by driving to the net and generating chances from there.”
Utah’s comeback win against Buffalo was their first of the season and their sixth all-time. The Mammoth hold a strong 5-1-0 record at home, leaning on their solid defensive strategy. Coach Andre Tourigny emphasized that “we defend with pace, compelling opponents to act swiftly. This is a key strength of ours.”
The teams went one-for-one in last season's encounters, with Utah claiming a 5-4 victory on Long Island and the Islanders posting a 2-1 win in Salt Lake City. Vejmelka’s career record against New York stands at 2-2, with a 2.02 GAA and a .931 save percentage.
As the weekend approaches, Friday’s game promises to be an intense showdown between a home team hungry for success and a rookie defenseman on the verge of greatness.
