Shooting Near White House Leads to Suspension of Afghan Visas

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A tragic shooting incident near the White House has claimed the life of a National Guard member and left another in critical condition, prompting a suspension of Afghan visas and asylum applications.

The shooter, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, previously served with the CIA-supported Afghan Army and was granted asylum this year. He faces severe charges, including first-degree murder and intent to kill.

Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, age 20, died tragically, while 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Both servicemen were part of the West Virginia National Guard, stationed in the capital.

Following the shooting, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services declared a temporary halt on all asylum applications “until complete vetting can be ensured for every applicant.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also confirmed that visa processing for Afghan passport holders has been stopped.

Neighbors of Lakanwal describe him as reserved and courteous, but struggling to secure employment. He recently worked with Amazon Flex but had entered the U.S. in 2021 through the Afghan resettlement initiative under the Biden administration and received asylum during Trump's tenure.

Beckstrom, who enlisted right after graduating high school in 2023, was remembered for her dedication and leadership, with her unit highlighting her commitment as a military police officer.

This incident has reignited discussions around immigration policies, vetting processes, and the safety of military personnel in domestic deployments, as investigations into Lakanwal's motives continue.
