Winter can be harsh on the skin. Cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating often leave the skin feeling dry, dull, and tired. Many people rely only on creams and lotions, but skin doctors say that what you eat is just as important, especially during the colder months.
A dermatologist, Dr Gurveen Waraich, recently highlighted five simple winter foods that help support skin health from the inside. These foods are easy to find, affordable, and already part of many Indian kitchens. They include beetroot, sweet potato, carrots, oranges, and spinach. According to her, these foods can even be blended together and taken as a morning juice for added benefits.
During winter, blood circulation slows down and the skin produces less natural oil. This can lead to dryness and uneven texture. Seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in winter are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals that help the skin repair itself, retain moisture, and maintain a healthy glow. Eating them regularly helps improve blood flow, supports collagen production, and keeps the skin looking fresh over time.
Beetroot is known for improving blood circulation. Better blood flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin, which supports an even skin tone. Beetroot can be added to salads, soups, yoghurt, or even mixed into dough for rotis. Many people also drink beetroot juice mixed with carrot and orange in the morning.
Sweet potato is another winter favourite. It is warm, filling, and rich in beta-carotene, which helps repair skin cells and protect the skin from damage. It can be boiled, roasted, or cooked into soups and simple dishes, making it easy to include in daily meals.
Carrots are widely available in winter and are packed with nutrients that support skin and eye health. They can be eaten raw, cooked as sabzi, added to rice dishes, or enjoyed as gajar ka halwa in moderation. Carrots also help strengthen immunity, which is important during cold weather.
Oranges are rich in vitamin C, which plays a key role in collagen production. Collagen helps keep the skin firm and healthy. Eating oranges whole, adding them to salads, or drinking fresh juice helps support brighter and stronger skin.
Spinach is a versatile green vegetable that fits into many dishes. It is rich in fibre and essential nutrients that support skin repair. Spinach can be added to dal, omelettes, khichdi, soups, or smoothies without changing the taste too much.
Dermatologists remind people that no single food can change skin overnight. However, eating seasonal foods regularly, drinking enough water, and following a simple skincare routine can help the skin stay healthy and glowing throughout winter. Small, daily habits make the biggest difference in the long run.
