On Friday, Israeli forces opened fire across the ceasefire line in northern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least five Palestinians, including a baby, according to local hospital sources. The incident occurred in Tuffah, an area within eastern Gaza City, as tensions rise and the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas appears to be faltering.
Rami Mhanna, the director of Shifa Hospital, confirmed that the victims comprised civilians who fell victim to the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military reported that their troops identified several "suspicious individuals" near command posts west of the designated Yellow Line, established by a U.S.-mediated ceasefire. While they aimed at these individuals, the military expressed sorrow for any unintended civilian casualties and stated that the incident is currently under review.
Diplomatic efforts to preserve stability in the region are ongoing, with U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff scheduled to confer with senior officials from various Middle Eastern countries in Florida. These discussions are intended to navigate the truce toward a more challenging second phase.
Initially established in October, the ceasefire coincided with the two-year anniversary of a notable Hamas-led assault on Israel that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities. Since the conflict began, nearly all of the 251 hostages taken during that incident have been released through subsequent prisoner swaps.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, functioning under Hamas governance, over 70,660 Palestinians have perished in the ongoing strife, with almost half categorized as women and children. While the ministry does not differentiate between combatants and non-combatants, its casualty figures are widely acknowledged as credible by international observers.
Despite the truce generally holding for the past three months, concerns over ceasefire violations have complicated matters. Moving into the second phase of negotiations presents significant challenges, including the introduction of an international stabilization team, the establishment of a technocratic government in Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, and further Israeli troop withdrawals.
