In a strong response to a fatal attack on American forces, the United States military executed significant airstrikes across central Syria on Friday, targeting various positions of the Islamic State, as reported by US officials.
Dubbed “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” the operation aimed at ISIS fighters, weapon caches, and logistical bases. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly confirmed the strikes, framing them as a definitive act of retribution and not as a step into broader conflict.
“This does not mark the onset of a war,” Hegseth remarked, asserting that the mission sought to deliver immediate justice to those culpable. He underscored the commitment of US forces to combat threats to American personnel as required.
The military action ensued after an incident near Palmyra, where an assailant attacked a joint convoy of US and Syrian troops, resulting in the deaths of two US Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter, alongside injuries to three other service members. The attacker was subsequently neutralized on site.
US intelligence assessments indicated that the attacker had ties to the Islamic State, despite his reported connections to Syrian security forces. Syrian officials later indicated he might have had extremist inclinations.
With approximately 1,000 troops stationed in Syria, the US aims to thwart the resurgence of ISIS. In recent months, coalition forces led by the US have heightened air and ground operations against remaining ISIS elements, often in collaboration with Syrian security units.
The political dynamics in Syria have notably changed since the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad last year after a lengthy civil conflict. The current administration under President Ahmed al-Sharaa has committed to cooperating with global initiatives against ISIS, formalizing efforts with the US-led coalition.
Officials in Washington reiterated that the recent strikes were targeted and aimed at discouraging future attacks while preserving regional peace.
