US Judge Rejects Trump Administration’s Challenge to New York Immigration Law

Post by : Saif Nasser

A federal judge in the United States has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration that sought to block a New York state law linked to immigration and driver’s licenses. The ruling is a setback for the former president’s efforts to challenge laws in Democratic-led states that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The case was decided on Tuesday by US District Judge Anne Nardacci in Albany, New York. She ruled that the US Department of Justice failed to show that New York’s law violated the US Constitution. As a result, the law will remain in force.

The law at the center of the dispute is known as the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, often called the “Green Light Law.” New York passed the law in 2019. It allows people living in the United States without legal immigration status to apply for standard driver’s licenses. The law also limits when the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles can share personal information, such as addresses and vehicle records, with federal immigration authorities.

The Trump administration argued that this law made it harder for federal agencies to enforce immigration laws. Officials claimed that New York was blocking access to important information needed to address what they described as a crisis of illegal immigration. The Justice Department asked the court to stop the law from being enforced.

Judge Nardacci rejected these arguments. She said the federal government could not point to any law that requires New York to share driver’s license information with immigration authorities. She also ruled that the administration failed to show how the state law interfered with federal powers or violated the Constitution.

New York Attorney General Letitia James welcomed the decision. She said the lawsuit was baseless and that the state’s laws are designed to protect the rights and safety of all New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul was also named in the lawsuit, along with other state officials.

The lawsuit was announced earlier this year by US Attorney General Pam Bondi as part of a wider legal effort by the Trump administration to challenge so-called “sanctuary” policies in Democratic states and cities. These policies often limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement in areas such as data sharing and local policing.

Supporters of the Green Light Law say it improves road safety by ensuring more drivers are licensed and insured. They also argue that it helps migrants live and work more safely without fear of routine contact with state agencies leading to deportation.

With this ruling, New York’s law remains in effect, and the Trump administration’s challenge has come to an end at the federal court level. The decision highlights ongoing legal and political debates in the United States over immigration, states’ rights, and the limits of federal authority.
