Four Democratic governors from the U.S. East Coast have asked the Trump administration to lift its suspension on several offshore wind energy projects. The governors say the halt is unfair, unexplained, and harmful to clean energy progress and local economies.
The request was made in a letter sent to U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, and Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee. The letter followed a decision by the Department of the Interior to pause leases for five offshore wind projects.
The Interior Department said the suspension was due to national security concerns. However, the governors strongly disagreed. They said the projects had already gone through long and detailed federal reviews, including checks related to national security. According to the governors, no federal agency warned their states about any new risks before the projects were suddenly stopped.
In the letter, the governors questioned the timing and reasoning behind the decision. They suggested that the national security claim may be an excuse rather than a real concern. They also pointed to President Donald Trump’s long-standing opposition to wind energy, which he has often described as ugly, expensive, and ineffective.
The freeze has added to the challenges already facing offshore wind developers. These projects require billions of dollars and years of planning. Repeated delays can raise costs, scare away investors, and slow the growth of clean energy jobs along the East Coast.
Federal agencies, including the Departments of the Interior and Commerce and the Environmental Protection Agency, have been following an order to pause new approvals for wind projects while leasing and permit rules are reviewed. Earlier this month, however, a federal judge rejected the administration’s broad halt on all new wind energy approvals, raising questions about the future of the current suspensions.
Supporters of offshore wind say these projects are important for reducing pollution, creating jobs, and strengthening energy security. Critics argue they are costly and raise environmental and security concerns. The disagreement highlights a deeper divide over U.S. energy policy and climate goals.
For now, the fate of the five offshore wind projects remains uncertain. The governors are pressing the federal government to reverse course and allow work to continue, saying clean energy progress should not be stopped without clear and proven reasons.
