In a pivotal move, the United States has delisted Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa from its terrorism blacklist mere days before his upcoming visit to the White House. This announcement from the State Department on Friday signifies a remarkable transformation in diplomatic relations, as Sharaa collaborates with Washington on crucial security matters.
Previously designated a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist," Sharaa was linked to extremist groups, including Al-Qaeda, and had a bounty placed on him by the US. His removal from the blacklist follows a resolution initiated by the US at the United Nations Security Council aimed at lifting UN sanctions against him.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott pointed out that this action showcases "progress evidenced by the Syrian leadership after Bashar al-Assad's exit and decades of oppression under his regime." The US also noted that Sharaa’s administration is working on vital issues such as identifying missing Americans and dismantling residual chemical weapons.
Sharaa’s ascent to power last year, with backing from Turkey and Gulf Arab allies, has significantly altered Syria’s political dynamics. His forces rapidly gained control in crucial areas through a swift offensive. The anticipated White House visit, set for Monday, garners close attention as President Donald Trump expresses support for Sharaa’s administration.
Reactions from regional players have been tepid. Israel, historically cautious of Syria's leadership, initially opposed diplomatic efforts and has executed military operations in Syria since Assad's removal to curtail perceived threats. Conversely, Sharaa’s collaboration with the US could signal a possible restructuring of alliances in the Middle East.
This decision is perceived as a pragmatic maneuver by Washington, reflecting both strategic interests and the shifting circumstances in Syria. Analysts assert that Sharaa’s impending visit might pave the way for fresh economic and security partnerships, although challenges persist.
