A recent controversy in India has once again shown how powerful and dangerous digital tools can be when used without responsibility. An artificial intelligence (AI) generated video showing Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a violent scene targeting Muslims created strong reactions across the country. The video was shared from a political social media account and later deleted, but not before it triggered anger, fear, and political tension.
The short clip used AI editing to mix real footage of the chief minister holding a weapon with fake visuals of people presented as Muslims. Text added to the video included aggressive slogans. Many viewers felt the message promoted hatred and division. Even though the video was removed, copies and screenshots continued to circulate, increasing the impact.
Opposition leaders strongly criticized the video and called it dangerous. They said such content can harm social unity and create mistrust between communities. Some leaders demanded police action and strict investigation into who created and approved the post. Civil rights groups also warned that such visuals can lead to real-world consequences if people take them seriously or feel threatened.
The chief minister said he had no knowledge of the video and was not involved in making or posting it. Party representatives described it as a mistake and said it should not have been shared. However, critics argued that official political accounts must be more careful because their messages carry weight and reach millions of people quickly.
This incident is not only about one video. It is also about the growing use of AI in political messaging. AI can create very realistic images and videos that look true even when they are not. For an ordinary viewer, it is often hard to tell what is real and what is fake. When such content involves religion, violence, or identity, the risks become even greater.
India is a diverse country with many religions, languages, and cultures. Because of this diversity, public communication must be handled with extra care. Political speech that appears to target a community can deepen divisions and create long-term damage. Even if posted as propaganda or campaign material, violent imagery tied to any group can increase fear and anger.
There is also a legal and ethical side to this issue. Laws against hate speech and incitement already exist, but AI content creates new challenges. Authorities now have to decide how these laws apply when videos are digitally created or heavily edited. Social media platforms also face pressure to detect and remove harmful AI content faster.
Another important lesson from this episode is the need for digital literacy. Citizens must learn to question shocking videos and check facts before sharing them. Schools, media groups, and public institutions should teach people how AI content works and how it can be misused. Awareness is one of the best defenses against manipulation.
Political parties, too, must set clear internal rules for online communication. Quick posts for attention or political gain can backfire if they cross ethical lines. Trust, once lost, is hard to rebuild. Responsible leadership means choosing words and images that inform people, not inflame them.
The AI video controversy should serve as a warning. Technology is moving faster than rules and habits. Without strong responsibility, digital tools can hurt the very society they are meant to serve. The path forward must include stricter standards, better awareness, and a firm commitment to respectful public debate.
