Dubai: The United States has officially established a drone task force in the Middle East, signifying a pivotal change in Washington's defense posture in the region. Named Task Force Scorpion Strike, this unit gives US Central Command (CENTCOM) direct oversight of America’s initial operational group of one-way attack drones aimed at countering Iran’s growing unmanned aerial capabilities.
CENTCOM confirmed this initiative on Wednesday, indicating it as a crucial advancement toward adapting to a battlefield increasingly influenced by low-cost, long-range drones. The newly created fleet, known as the Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), was developed using designs reverse-engineered after the US acquired an Iranian Shahed drone and analyzed its various components.
The outcome is a 10-foot autonomous system reflecting the characteristics of the widely recognized Shahed-136, yet built with US-grade reliability. Each LUCAS drone is reported to cost approximately $35,000, a significant reduction compared to the millions required for advanced interceptors traditionally used by the US.
Redefining Drone Warfare
Iran’s Shahed-136 drones have transformed conflict environments from the Red Sea to Ukraine, frequently appearing in swarms and challenging aerial defense frameworks. Over the past two years, Iran-backed groups have persistently targeted US installations in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan, while Houthi factions have launched extensive drone and missile attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The urgency increased in 2024 when Iran launched almost 170 drones towards Israel, prompting extensive interception efforts from US forces and allies. These ongoing assaults have accelerated the Pentagon’s initiative to integrate cost-effective systems aimed at countering mass threats.
LUCAS drones are designed for autonomous, long-range operations and can be deployed using catapults, rocket-assisted launch systems, or movable platforms, facilitating quick mobilization across varied landscapes. CENTCOM has not revealed the specific number of operational drones at this moment, mentioning only that “many” are already positioned in the area, with more on the way.
Task Force Details
Task Force Scorpion Strike consists of nearly twenty personnel, several of whom are sourced from US Special Operations Command–Central. Not all members are stationed in the region, and the exact location of the squadron is classified for security purposes.
This initiative follows a recent acceleration by CENTCOM in acquiring economical unmanned systems, acknowledging that existing expensive US weaponry could not keep pace with adversaries’ cost-effective attack drones. Through the introduction of LUCAS, Washington is demonstrating a strategic shift: addressing low-cost threats with equally affordable solutions.
The formation of this new squadron highlights the evolving dynamics of modern warfare, where the balance is increasingly influenced not just by precision but also by cost-effectiveness, volume, and flexibility.
