The United States military has launched heavy airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) positions in Syria. US officials said the action was taken after a deadly attack on American personnel earlier this month.
According to US military sources, the strikes hit more than 70 ISIS targets across central Syria. These targets included ISIS fighters, weapons storage sites, and other facilities used by the group to plan attacks. The operation was named Operation Hawkeye Strike.
The strikes followed an attack on December 13 in the historic Syrian city of Palmyra. During that incident, two US Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed when a convoy of American and Syrian forces was attacked. Three other US soldiers were injured. The attacker was later killed by security forces.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the military action was a direct response to the loss of American lives. He said the goal was to send a clear warning to ISIS that attacks on US troops would not go unanswered.
“This was a powerful response,” Hegseth said. “We targeted ISIS fighters, their weapons, and their support systems.”
The operation involved US fighter jets, attack helicopters, and long-range rocket systems. Jordanian fighter aircraft also joined the mission, showing regional cooperation against ISIS.
President Donald Trump said the strikes were successful and caused serious damage to ISIS networks. Speaking at a rally, he said the US had delivered a strong blow to the militants responsible for the attack on coalition forces.
Trump also stated that Syria’s current government supported the US action against ISIS. He said the strikes were meant to protect American forces and prevent future attacks.
US Central Command confirmed that the strikes were carefully planned to avoid civilian areas. Officials said the mission focused only on known ISIS positions in remote regions.
Syria’s foreign ministry said the country remains committed to eliminating ISIS and preventing the group from finding safe shelter within its borders. Syrian officials said they continue to cooperate with the US-led coalition in fighting terrorism.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said the attacker in Palmyra was believed to be linked to ISIS and may have had support from within local security forces. Authorities said investigations are ongoing.
Around 1,000 US troops are still stationed in Syria. Their main task is to help stop ISIS from rebuilding after losing much of its territory in recent years.
Although ISIS no longer controls large areas of land, it continues to carry out attacks through small cells. US officials warned that the group remains dangerous and must be closely monitored.
The latest US strikes show that Washington is determined to protect its personnel and maintain pressure on ISIS. However, officials also admitted that the fight against the extremist group is far from over.
