In a major escalation of conflict in the Middle East, the United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes against Iran. The joint operation, described by Israeli officials as a pre-emptive attack, has caused explosions in Tehran and other cities. These strikes mark one of the most serious confrontations between the countries in years, raising fears of a wider regional war.
According to reports, the military action began early on February 28, 2026, after months of rising tension over Iran’s nuclear program and missile capabilities. The operation is said to be coordinated between U.S. and Israeli forces, with military targets hit in Tehran and other locations across Iran. Smoke rising over major Iranian cities was reported by news agencies, and airspace over Iran has been closed to civilian flights for safety.
Israeli leaders justified the attack by saying it was necessary to protect their nation from what they see as a growing security threat. They argued that Iran’s nuclear and missile programs could pose an “imminent” danger. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the strikes were meant to reduce that threat and called the operation pre-emptive in nature. The government declared a state of emergency and closed Israeli airspace as warning sirens sounded in many cities.
The United States has also confirmed its involvement in the strikes. Officials say U.S. military assets participated in the offensive, which included air and possibly naval operations. The joint action reflects a deep military cooperation between the two nations but also increases the risk of wider conflict if Iran responds with its own military force.
For years, diplomatic talks have been underway to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities, including negotiations involving multiple countries. However, differences over limits on missile programs and nuclear infrastructure have stalled progress. The recent strikes occurred soon after these diplomacy efforts failed to produce a final agreement.
In Iran, state media reported explosions and smoke in Tehran as the strikes began. The government has warned in response that it will take action against foreign military bases in the region if further attacks continue. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reported moved to a secure location for safety as the situation unfolded.
The strikes have also affected civilian life. Both Iran and Israel closed their airspace to protect passengers and aircraft. Neighboring countries, including Iraq, shut down their airspace as well amid concerns that the conflict could spread or create danger over key flight paths. This airspace closure has disrupted civilian flights connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
World leaders and international organizations have expressed concern over the recent military action. Many are calling for restraint and urging all sides to reduce tensions through diplomacy rather than force. A wider conflict could have far-reaching effects on global security, oil markets, and the lives of millions across the region.
For now, the immediate impact of the strikes — including any casualties or damage — is still being assessed due to the rapidly changing situation. As Iran considers its next steps, many fear that a dangerous cycle of retaliation could begin, affecting not only the Middle East but also relations between global powers.
