In a significant blow to Malaysia's aspirations at the upcoming Uber Cup Finals, top women’s doubles player Pearly Tan has announced her withdrawal stemming from a lingering back injury.
The 24-year-old made her announcement via a public statement, expressing heartfelt apologies to teammates, officials, and fans for her inability to partake in the prestigious tournament.
Pearly revealed that her current injury flared up during her latest competition and is related to a previous condition she battled three years ago, which had previously jeopardized her career.
She candidly mentioned the emotional toll this decision has taken, stating the difficulty of withdrawing from such a vital event while hoping to compete side-by-side with her teammates.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia has officially acknowledged her withdrawal, with coaching director Rexy Mainaky indicating that she is not fit to compete at the necessary level.
With Pearly out of the picture, Malaysia will be without its premier women’s doubles pairing, prompting her partner M. Thinaah to seek a new partner for the event.
The Uber Cup Finals, scheduled to be held in Horsens, will see Malaysia placed in Group B, facing formidable opponents such as Japan, Turkiye, and South Africa.
Despite this setback, the team aims to harness the talents of emerging doubles pairs and seasoned singles players to stay competitive in the tournament.
