The search continues as Moroccan and United States military forces work tirelessly to locate two American soldiers who vanished during collaborative military exercises off Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Engaging over 600 personnel from multiple nations, the operation is active near Tan-Tan, focusing on coastal waters, underwater caves, and rugged shorelines.
Military sources report that the missing US Army soldiers were last seen near the Cap Draa training zone during the multinational African Lion 2026 military drill. It is suspected they may have embarked on a recreational hike before encountering perilous coastal conditions that led to their disappearance into the ocean.
Now in its fifth day, the search mission has already covered over 45 square kilometers of ocean and coastal land. Officials indicate that the focus remains on the missing soldiers' recovery, as well as ensuring the safety of all military personnel involved in the operation.
African Lion is recognized as one of Africa’s largest military exercises, spearheaded by the United States and collaborating with African and international partners. The ongoing 2026 iteration includes participation from more than 7,000 military personnel across over 30 nations, taking place in Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal.
Imagery released by the Moroccan Navy illustrates military divers investigating submerged caves alongside aerial support from helicopters and surveillance aircraft scanning both land and ocean territories. Search teams, joined by canine units and emergency responders, are actively navigating challenging rocky beaches and isolated coastal areas.
To bolster the search efforts, several military vessels have been reassigned from the exercise, including a Moroccan multi-mission frigate and a French support ship. American logistics vessels are also contributing significantly to the coordination of rescue and surveillance operations.
Air support is crucial to these efforts, with various aircraft deployed, including US UC-35 Citation jets, US Army C-12 Huron surveillance planes, and Moroccan Puma helicopters. Moreover, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles and drones is enhancing observation capabilities over complex search regions.
While the identities of the missing soldiers have not been disclosed, both Moroccan and US authorities reassure that there is ongoing communication with the families as rescuers persist in their challenging mission along the Atlantic coast.
The incident has garnered significant international attention as the African Lion 2026 exercise nears its end later this week. Analysts emphasize that this operation underscores the robust military collaboration between Morocco, the United States, and allied nations, especially concerning large-scale multinational drills and emergency response strategies.
