A UPS cargo aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, killing at least seven people and injuring 11 others. The jet, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 built in 1991, had been scheduled to fly to Honolulu and went down at about 5:15 p.m., authorities reported.
Video footage from witnesses showed flames erupting from the left wing and a plume of smoke as the plane struggled to climb. The aircraft then detonated in a large fireball near the runway's end, producing extensive damage to nearby structures, including severe roof loss on one building.
Officials say four of the deceased were on the ground; the status of the three crew members who were aboard has not been fully disclosed. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said several of the injured sustained critical wounds and described the scene as "one of the most violent scenes ever witnessed."
UPS paused operations at its Worldport hub — the company’s primary package-handling facility that supports thousands of employees and hundreds of daily flights — halting sorting functions that typically process hundreds of thousands of packages every hour.
Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey announced the airport will remain closed until the site is declared safe. Nearby businesses, including Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and an auto parts store, sustained direct impacts. Multiple witnesses compared the scene to a "war zone," reporting explosions and thick black smoke visible for miles.
The National Transportation Safety Board has opened a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident. Early indications point to a fire originating near the left engine, which may have ignited the aircraft’s fuel load.
The crash has left the Louisville community reeling, with local officials providing support to victims and families as investigators work to determine the circumstances behind one of the city’s most serious recent aviation disasters.
