A gastroenterologist at Manipal Hospital has issued a stern warning regarding the consumption of raw milk. Despite widespread online belief in its purported health benefits, experts contend that raw milk is far from safe. This type of milk, which hasn't undergone heat treatment, can harbor dangerous bacteria that pose serious health risks.
Dr. Sambit Bhuyan, based in Bhubaneswar, asserts that raw milk is a hazard for everyone. He notes that milk sourced from cows, goats, or sheep must always be pasteurized to eliminate harmful germs. The pasteurization process effectively safeguards consumers by killing off these bacteria, whereas raw milk bypasses this crucial step.
The risks associated with raw milk include exposure to lethal pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and even tuberculosis bacteria. These microorganisms can provoke severe foodborne illnesses, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and muscle aches. In some cases, infections stemming from raw milk can be fatal.
The physician has particularly emphasized the increased dangers for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Those with conditions like diabetes or cancer, as well as organ transplant recipients, face heightened risks from the bacteria contained in raw milk.
Dr. Bhuyan also raised concerns about the effect of raw milk on pregnant women, warning it can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, or significantly underweight newborns, primarily due to the presence of Listeria, a highly dangerous bacterium in such cases.
While many believe that raw milk offers greater nutritional value, Dr. Bhuyan asserts that the health risks far outweigh any potential advantages. Safe consumption can only be guaranteed through pasteurization.
The doctor’s conclusion is clear: the dangers posed by raw milk are simply not worth the potential benefits. For a safe and nutritious dairy experience, consuming pasteurized milk is highly recommended.
