Understanding Diabetes: Its Impact on Hormones, Bones, and Skin on World Diabetes Day 2025

Post by : Saif Nasser

As World Diabetes Day 2025 approaches on November 14, medical professionals in New Delhi emphasized a broader perspective: diabetes poses risks that extend beyond just elevated blood sugar levels. This condition influences various bodily functions, including hormones, bones, skin, and even hair health. The day's observance serves as a crucial reminder for individuals to assess their risks and initiate preventive strategies early.

This year’s campaign, themed “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response,” inspires individuals to delve deeper into the mechanics of diabetes. Experts assert that this knowledge fosters better understanding and proactive measures to safeguard one’s health.

Various specialists provided insights into how diabetes inflicts harm in subtle yet significant ways.

Dr. Shobha Gupta, an IVF expert, noted that diabetes can disrupt hormonal balance in women. She highlighted that many women in their 30s and 40s experience irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and infertility linked to insulin resistance. Dr. Gupta advocates for lifestyle modifications, timely screenings, and enhanced awareness as essential steps to avert lasting health challenges.

Orthopedic specialist Dr. Abhishek Vaish stressed that diabetes can significantly undermine bone integrity. Many patients are unaware that high blood sugar contributes to diminished bone strength, rendering them more prone to fractures. Regular health assessments and efficient blood sugar management are vital for maintaining optimal skeletal health.

Cosmetologist Dr. Karuna Malhotra indicated that diabetes also manifests through skin and hair complications. She pointed out that symptoms such as dark patches on the neck, acne, and lackluster skin may signal insulin resistance. While topical treatments can provide temporary relief, addressing the underlying bodily imbalances is crucial for effective long-term care.

Medical professionals concur that while diabetes can often sneak up without noticeable symptoms, its detrimental effects on vital organs—such as the heart, kidneys, and nerves—are far-reaching. Thus, early diagnosis, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and consistent medical check-ups are essential.

World Diabetes Day serves as a poignant reminder to heed potential warning signals. With increased awareness and early intervention, many severe complications can be effectively mitigated.
