A team of archaeologists has identified two previously uncharted voids within the Pyramid of Menkaure in Giza, igniting excitement over a potential lost entrance to the ancient tomb. This important discovery provides fresh insights into the smallest of the three great pyramids of the Giza necropolis, which stands nearly 200 feet tall and is believed to have been constructed around 2510 BC during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty.
The researchers, a joint effort from Cairo University and Germany’s Technical University of Munich (TUM), employed state-of-the-art, non-invasive scanning techniques to explore the pyramid's interior without compromising its historical integrity. By utilizing methods such as georadar, ultrasound, and electrical resistance tomography, the team successfully detected air pockets situated behind the pyramid’s outer layer.
The newly discovered voids have depths of 4.6 feet and 3.7 feet. The larger cavity measures about 3.2 feet in height and 4.9 feet in width, while the smaller one stands approximately 3 feet tall and 2.3 feet wide. Both voids are located close to a distinctive area featuring polished granite blocks on the eastern side of the pyramid—an unusual attribute, as polished stones are typically seen only at the northern entry point. This unusual find has spurred curiosity that this eastern area could signify a concealed secondary entrance, as previously posited by researcher Stijn van den Hoven in 2019.
This latest discovery is reminiscent of the significant revelations made earlier in 2023 when ScanPyramids researchers uncovered an unknown chamber within the Great Pyramid of Khufu. These findings underscore the effectiveness of advanced, non-destructive approaches to reveal hidden architectural features in ancient monuments, enhancing our understanding of these historic structures without incurring damage.
Though the Pyramid of Menkaure is smaller compared to its famed neighbors, it continues to unveil mysteries that enrich our comprehension of Egypt’s ancient architectural ingenuity and the burial practices that surrounded royal interments during the Fourth Dynasty.
