A devastating incident unfolded in Ulsan, South Korea, when a 60-meter (196-foot) boiler tower caved in during demolition activities at a defunct thermal power plant on Thursday afternoon. This incident resulted in the deaths of three workers, with five more trapped under the rubble, as reported by local authorities.
A total of nine personnel were present at the site when the large structure collapsed. Rescue crews quickly extracted two workers from the debris, but sadly, one of them was later confirmed deceased at a hospital early Friday morning.
The recovery efforts unearthed a second victim hours after the incident, while medical personnel at the scene declared a third worker's death, still trapped within the wreckage. There are concerns that the remaining two missing workers may also have perished.
Rescue operations faced considerable obstacles due to precarious debris and hazardous materials on-site. Search efforts were temporarily put on hold Friday morning because of fears regarding further collapses, compelling teams to stabilize the structure before they could continue.
Kim Jeong-shik, an official from the Ulsan Fire Department, noted that over 340 rescue personnel and numerous vehicles were dispatched to the scene, equipped with thermal cameras, rescue dogs, endoscopes, and various detection devices. “The area is laden with significant amounts of asbestos and glass fibers, and the confined space necessitates manual debris clearance,” Kim indicated in a press briefing.
President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea has instructed officials to utilize all available resources and personnel to aid in the rescue of the remaining trapped workers, stressing the importance of ensuring the safety of first responders working in perilous conditions.
The power plant had been taken out of service in 2021 after forty years of operation. Authorities disclosed that the boiler tower, one of three on-site, had been structurally compromised during the ongoing demolition process, which may have triggered the sudden collapse.
The unfolding tragedy is renewing discussions around the safety regulations regarding demolition activities and workplace safety standards in South Korea—a nation that has seen numerous industrial accidents recently, despite improvements in safety protocols.
