Zelenskyy Declines US Urgings for Territory Concessions

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

ROME/LONDON – Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has categorically rejected U.S. demands to relinquish any territory to Russia, asserting Ukraine’s right to maintain its sovereignty while seeking heightened support from European nations.

In his recent remarks, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is neither legally nor morally obligated to surrender territory. “Per our constitution and international law, we lack such rights,” he emphasized, reaffirming Ukraine's commitment to its sovereignty amidst ongoing hostilities.

Intensive Diplomatic Engagement in Europe

Zelenskyy’s recent visits included pivotal discussions with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Pope Leo XIV, and leaders from the United Kingdom. In Rome, he focused on advancing peace talks, establishing robust security guarantees, while pressing Russia for sincere negotiations.

The Vatican, maintaining its neutral stance, highlighted the necessity for ongoing dialogue, advocating for diplomatic strategies leading to a “just and lasting peace.” Zelenskyy also conferred with British PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to strengthen Ukraine’s opposition to territorial losses.

Escalating Conflict on the Ground

Despite diplomatic endeavors, battles rage on various fronts. Reports indicate that Russia has deployed 110 drones overnight, with 24 reaching their targets, causing widespread emergency power outages throughout Ukraine. Conversely, Ukraine retaliated with drone strikes on Russian energy sites, striking a liquefied gas terminal at Temryuk port and igniting fires.

The ongoing conflict exacerbates humanitarian issues, with only 65% of the $278 million needed for Ukraine’s winter assistance plan secured, leaving many without adequate heating, financial support, and essential services.

US Pressure and Internal Debate

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Zelenskyy to consider territorial concessions and suggested elections should occur despite martial law, arguing for Russia's perceived advantage. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy remains steadfast, demanding security guarantees prior to any elections and suggesting readiness to hold them within 60 to 90 days under suitable conditions.

A Resolute Nation

As Zelenskyy galvanizes European allies and withstands external pressures, Ukraine is determined to defend its sovereignty. The country is actively pursuing diplomatic engagement while maintaining military strength, asserting that any peace agreement must respect its territorial integrity.
