UAEU Develops Sustainable Solution to Fortify Concrete Structures

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has achieved a remarkable milestone in construction safety by obtaining a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a method designed to fortify reinforced concrete structures against progressive collapse.

This innovative technique, spearheaded by Prof. Bilal El-Ariss, alongside Professor Said Elkholy and MSc student Eng. Ahmad Shehada, merges safety with sustainability and cost-effectiveness. It utilizes short, diagonal steel bars—often remnants from the construction site—to strengthen vulnerable columns during the building process.

By aligning beams that intersect at right angles across these columns, the method drastically increases the structure’s resilience against disproportionate collapse, even in the event of a critical column's failure. Notably, this approach requires no extra materials, special tools, or additional labor, ensuring seamless integration with traditional construction methods and architectural designs.

Dr. El-Ariss stated, “This innovation transcends structural engineering; it’s about fostering safer urban environments while endorsing sustainability.” In rapidly expanding urban regions like the UAE—situated near seismic zones—the demand for robust construction is paramount. This method also aligns with global sustainable development goals by reusing construction waste and lowering environmental impact without raising project costs.

Looking ahead, the UAEU team intends to partner with contractors and consultants for wider implementation of this system. They are also planning additional research to refine the technique and promote awareness of its life-saving capabilities, ensuring residential buildings are safer while serving eco-friendly construction practices.
