The bodies of a Russian cryptocurrency entrepreneur, Roman Novak, 38, and his wife Anna, were discovered in a desolate area of the UAE, suggesting possible ties to a contentious USD 500 million crypto investment dispute. Their remains, wrapped in plastic and concealed in a remote stretch near Hatta along the UAE-Oman border, have raised serious red flags for investigators.
An international investigation was launched after the couple was reported missing on October 2. They had been last seen after their private driver dropped them off near a lake in Hatta, where they intended to meet potential investors for a new cryptocurrency project. However, authorities uncovered that they switched vehicles and essentially vanished.
When their family lost contact, Russian officials worked together with Emirati law enforcement. Phone records indicated their devices moved between locations in Hatta and Oman before communication abruptly ceased on October 4.
Initial evidence suggests that Novak and his wife were lured to a villa under the guise of business opportunities. It is believed they were held against their will and coerced to hand over digital wallet access related to Fintopio, a cryptocurrency platform that Novak had been actively promoting in Russia, China, and the Middle East. When the captors failed to retrieve the assets, tragedy ensued, with their bodies treated to eliminate forensic evidence.
Russian publication 47news reports that the remains were uncovered over a span of 500 meters in the desert, though there are unverified allegations that parts might have been improperly disposed of in a shopping complex’s bins. Official confirmation of these details is awaited.
Scrutiny into Novak's past has intensified; he was once a prominent figure in Dubai's burgeoning crypto scene but was previously convicted in 2020 in Russia for investment fraud, resulting in a six-year prison sentence before his release in 2023. After moving to the UAE, he started several digital asset initiatives, and Russian authorities now estimate that his business may have amassed around USD 500 million before Fintopio's wallet services ceased at the time of the couple's disappearance.
Seven individuals in Russia have been arrested, and ongoing collaboration between Moscow and Abu Dhabi continues as UAE officials prepare to bring the bodies back for further forensic examinations. The incident has been categorized as a premeditated kidnapping and homicide in connection with alleged crypto scheme disputes.
