UAE Commits $15 Million to Support Refugees from Sudan Amid Crisis

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant display of humanitarian support, the United Arab Emirates has unveiled a $15 million donation to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), aimed at assisting refugees and those displaced in Sudan and surrounding regions. This commitment was revealed during the UNHCR Pledging Conference in Geneva, coinciding with the appeal for the 2026 Global Initiative.

This initiative reinforces the UAE's prominent position as a major contributor to global humanitarian efforts. Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, highlighted the critical need for unified action in response to the escalating global displacement challenges fueled by conflict, persecution, and climate change.

Since conflict erupted in Sudan in 2023, the UAE has been at the forefront of relief operations, providing almost $784 million in humanitarian assistance. This places the UAE as the second-largest donor to Sudan, right behind the United States, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Over the last decade, from 2015 to 2025, the total aid provided by the UAE to Sudan exceeds $4.24 billion.

The annual UNHCR Pledging Conference, held at Geneva's Palais des Nations, gathers member states to announce voluntary contributions for the approaching year. These contributions are crucial for maintaining emergency responses, especially for the most vulnerable groups, including women and children, who suffer the most in displacement crises.

By enhancing predictable and timely humanitarian financing, the UAE’s contribution is expected to bolster essential services such as shelter, healthcare, and education, thereby aiding in the stabilization of communities impacted by ongoing conflicts.
