In a strategic move showcasing its technological ambitions, South Korea has partnered with the United Arab Emirates to unveil plans for an expansive artificial intelligence data campus in the Gulf region. This collaboration was announced during President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to the UAE for a high-level summit.
Named Stargate UAE, this initiative aims to establish one of the biggest AI data center complexes globally, positioned beyond the reach of the United States. This represents a crucial development in international technological collaboration, especially given past U.S. restrictions on advanced technology transfers to the UAE due to its connections with China.
The project’s initial phase will incorporate a 1-gigawatt facility constructed by the UAE’s state-backed company G42. The venture will include partnerships with key global tech giants such as OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco Systems, and Japan's SoftBank Group. Analysts believe these collaborations could position the UAE as a pivotal hub for AI research and data management, drawing investment and talent from around the globe.
Industry experts observe that this partnership signifies an increasing tendency for nations to enhance their technological independence while nurturing global cooperation in AI. The Stargate initiative is anticipated to elevate the UAE’s digital infrastructure, enabling it to support extensive AI applications, from smart cities to advanced computational research.
With the groundbreaking set to commence shortly, the Stargate UAE campus is poised to transform the AI data processing landscape in the Middle East, fostering technological synergy between Asia, the Gulf, and the global tech industry.
