UAE Achieves Fifth Consecutive Term on IMO Council, Category B

Post by : Mara Rahim

The United Arab Emirates has once again marked a significant achievement in the global maritime arena by being elected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category B for the fifth consecutive term. This recognition underscores the UAE’s robust international presence and its critical role in shaping the future landscape of maritime transport at both regional and global scales.

This milestone represents years of dedicated effort from the UAE to establish a modern and innovative maritime sector. The nation has enacted comprehensive regulations, enhanced maritime services through cutting-edge digital systems, improved ship safety, and aligned efforts with global goals aimed at reducing harmful emissions. These unified initiatives have garnered the UAE recognition as a leader in advancing sustainability and efficiency within the global shipping industry.

The UAE’s election to the IMO Council also signifies the growing confidence of the global community in its maritime framework. The country boasts world-class maritime infrastructure, highly efficient ports, and a flexible regulatory framework, all of which foster growth, innovation, and competitiveness in the international maritime market. Consequently, the UAE is acknowledged as one of the most trustworthy and impactful nations in global maritime operations.

On this notable occasion, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, conveyed his pride and congratulated the UAE leadership. He emphasized that this success stems from the astute guidance and unwavering support of the nation's leaders, who are committed to cultivating a robust, modern maritime sector that plays a crucial role in the national economy and is a significant contributor to global maritime trade.

Al Mazrouei noted that the UAE has emerged as a maritime leader, thanks to its comprehensive laws and progressive policies aimed at enhancing the seas' safety and sustainability while preparing the sector for future challenges. He stated that the UAE’s re-election to the IMO Council—with one of the highest vote counts—validates the country’s esteemed global stature and the trust vested in its capacity to cultivate a robust and sustainable maritime ecosystem.

He highlighted the UAE’s active role in shaping global maritime laws since joining the IMO in 1980. The country initially secured a seat on the IMO Council in 2017 and, since then, has significantly contributed to bolstering maritime safety, minimizing carbon footprints, safeguarding marine environments, and formulating navigation policies. These contributions have proactively steered the global maritime industry toward elevated standards and enhanced environmental safeguards.

The Minister also remarked on the new responsibilities accompanying the UAE’s renewed membership, emphasizing its potential for greater leadership in pioneering future maritime transport strategies. The UAE aims to advocate for modern technology, spur innovation, and collaborate with international partners to forge a maritime system that is safe, environmentally friendly, resilient, and capable of addressing climate-related challenges. Such initiatives are vital for safeguarding global supply chains and ensuring consistent maritime operations worldwide.

In conclusion, he reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to ongoing collaboration with international maritime bodies. The UAE will persist in enhancing the competitiveness of the global maritime sector and facilitating a transition toward more innovative and environmentally responsible systems that can meet future demands.

With this latest term on the IMO Council, the UAE once again establishes itself as a prominent leader in the maritime sector and a committed advocate for international advancement.
