Two Held After Deliberate Fire Put Drogheda Residents at Risk

Authorities in Drogheda, County Louth, have detained two men in their 20s following a deliberate fire at premises housing people applying for international protection last Friday night. The blaze is reported to have posed a serious threat to residents, including children.

Gardaí opened an immediate investigation into the incident, which is being treated as an alleged attempt at arson. Emergency services moved quickly, evacuating and rescuing five people from the building's top floor — four of them children. Several residents were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical checks after the evacuation.

Investigators say the fire was set intentionally by unknown individuals. One man was arrested on Wednesday night and a second on Thursday morning; both are suspected of offences under the Criminal Damage Act 1991. Garda inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

A Garda spokesperson called the act "extremely dangerous," stressing the grave risk to children and other vulnerable occupants. The spokesperson also praised the rapid and effective response of emergency crews for ensuring the safe evacuation of residents.

The episode has prompted renewed concerns about the safety and security of accommodation provided to people seeking international protection. Gardaí have asked anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation.

The Drogheda community has expressed relief that those evacuated did not suffer serious injuries and is awaiting further updates as police continue their inquiries.
