US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is keen to conclude the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, although discussions between Moscow and US representatives ended without a resolution.
Special envoy Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, invested significant time negotiating at the Kremlin. Despite their commitment, no agreement surfaced to resolve what has become Europe’s gravest conflict since World War II.
Addressing reporters from the Oval Office, Trump termed his meeting with Putin as “very good,” suggesting that the American delegation left with the impression that the Russian president is inclined to end the war. “Their impression was very strong that he’d like to make a deal,” Trump noted.
Witkoff and Kushner shared a revised US proposal, which involved Ukraine relinquishing certain parts of the eastern Donbas region and agreeing to refrain from NATO membership. While Kyiv found much of the plan acceptable, Moscow dismissed some sections as unacceptable. Kremlin officials reiterated their openness to diplomacy, despite recent advancements on the battlefield.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov mentioned that Russia’s recent military gains in eastern Ukraine shaped the negotiation process. Russian forces have made headway in the region over the past month, with President Putin warning of a readiness to continue fighting for all disputed territories should Ukraine not comply.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that Russia remains willing to further the dialogue, underscoring the potential for diplomacy. In contrast, NATO has been providing military aid to Ukraine, distributing hundreds of millions of dollars in armaments. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that while peace talks are promising, the alliance must ensure Ukraine retains sufficient strength for its defense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recognized a possible opening for peace but stressed that any negotiations must be bolstered by international pressure on Russia. “The world now clearly feels that there is an opportunity to end the war, and the current activity in negotiations must be supported by pressure on Russia,” Zelensky remarked.
Recent discussions have raised concerns across Europe, where nations worry that the US and Russia may forge agreements without adequately consulting Kyiv. They have been working to refine the US proposal to prevent Ukraine from being compelled to concede.
Despite the prevailing diplomatic uncertainty, Trump remains positive about the prospect of a resolution, noting that an opportunity for peace was also present earlier this year when he met with President Zelensky to discuss various options.
As hostilities continue, Russian troops are steadily advancing along the front lines, with active clashes reported in critical locations such as Pokrovsk. Observers note that the situation remains dynamic, with international diplomacy playing a pivotal role in determining the future of the conflict.
