In a significant political move, US President Donald Trump has announced his intent to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who faced conviction in a US court on severe drug trafficking charges. Hernández, who held office from 2014 until 2022, was extradited to the US in April 2022 to answer accusations of spearheading a violent drug trafficking network that allegedly funneled massive quantities of cocaine into the United States.
A New York jury found Hernández guilty in March 2024 on charges including cocaine importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns. He received a 45-year prison sentence. In his social media statement, Trump asserted that Hernández had been "treated very harshly and unfairly," indicating his willingness to grant a pardon.
This announcement arrives just days prior to Honduras's general election, set for Sunday. Trump also voiced his support for conservative candidate Nasry "Tito" Asfura, the previous mayor of Tegucigalpa and a member of the National Party, claiming that Asfura "stands up for democracy" and that he has campaigned against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, whom Trump has previously criticized for alleged drug trafficking ties.
Tensions rise as the Honduran election is viewed as highly competitive, with recent polls indicating a tight race among Asfura, Rixi Moncada of the ruling left-wing Libre Party, and former TV personality Salvador Nasralla, representing the centrist Liberal Party. Trump has publicly criticized both Moncada and Nasralla, the latter described as "a borderline Communist" whose campaign could divide votes between Asfura and Moncada. Nasralla has pledged to sever ties with Venezuela if he wins.
Since 2022, Honduras has been under the leadership of President Xiomara Castro, who has fostered strong ties with Cuba and Venezuela while maintaining cooperation with the US, including adherence to a long-standing extradition treaty. Her administration allows the presence of a US military base that has actively targeted organized crime and drug trafficking in the region.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration has defended its operations against Venezuela, which includes a series of US strikes against vessels suspected of drug smuggling, labeled as "Operation Southern Spear." This initiative aims to dismantle narcoterrorism, resulting in significant casualties, although legal experts challenge the operations' legitimacy, questioning the evidence for drug trafficking.
Trump's decision to pardon Hernández and endorse Asfura underscores the US's continual interest in Central American governance, particularly regarding efforts to combat drug trafficking and influence electoral dynamics in the region.
