During a recent press briefing at the White House, US President Donald Trump lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "a great man" and confirmed that ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States are "progressing well." He hinted at a possible visit to India next year, which could mark a significant step in fortifying the India-US partnership.
Trump noted that both nations are in dialogue about a pivotal trade agreement, emphasizing that discussions are proceeding positively. He expressed admiration for Modi, referring to him as "a friend" and highlighting India's choice to "largely halt purchases of oil from Russia," a statement he has reiterated in recent weeks.
Previously, Trump enforced a 50% tariff on Indian goods, which included a 25% surcharge on imports of Russian oil and defense equipment, asserting that such transactions indirectly aided Moscow's military endeavors. India, however, has firmly rejected these claims, insisting that its oil imports are determined by national interests and pricing.
The US and India are working on an extensive trade deal aimed at enhancing cooperation across several sectors, including technology, energy, and defense. Trump stated, "We are collaborating like never before," expressing confidence in the future of US-India relations and adding, "Prime Minister Modi is a great man, and I plan to visit India soon. We'll finalize those details shortly."
While he did not provide specific dates, Trump indicated that the visit could occur in 2026. This statement arises amid uncertainties surrounding his participation in the upcoming Quad Summit, which India is set to host later this year. The Quad, comprising the US, India, Japan, and Australia, seeks to bolster regional stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific.
Despite Trump's assertions about a decline in Russian oil imports, recent statistics indicate a slight increase in such imports in October compared to September. India is currently the second-largest buyer of Russian crude following China, with Russian oil constituting nearly 40% of India's total imports in 2024, a surge from 3% in 2021.
The Indian government has consistently defended its oil purchases, emphasizing the need to secure affordable energy for its population. They argue that as a developing nation, it is essential to prioritize the needs of citizens while abiding by international diplomatic practices.
Washington is encouraging New Delhi to boost its imports of US oil and gas. A representative from India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed ongoing dialogues aimed at enhancing energy collaboration and diversifying India's energy sources.
Although tensions over Russian oil imports had strained relations, recent developments indicate renewed collaboration between the two nations. Trump has claimed to maintain regular communication with Modi, highlighting mutual respect and a unified aim for stronger bilateral ties.
In 2024, the US emerged as India’s top trading partner, with bilateral trade approaching $190 billion. Both leaders aspire to significantly increase this figure to $500 billion in the coming years, a target deemed attainable if the upcoming trade agreement comes to fruition.
As discussions around Trump's potential visit to India intensify, global observers foresee it as a pivotal move that could redefine the trajectory of India-US relations, indicating a deeper strategic alliance between the two democratic nations.
