80,000 Non-Immigrant Visas Cancelled in Trump-Era Enforcement Drive

80,000 Non-Immigrant Visas Cancelled in Trump-Era Enforcement Drive

Post by : Raina Nasser

In an expansion of a strict immigration agenda, a senior State Department official confirmed that roughly 80,000 non-immigrant visas have been revoked since the Trump administration took office. The move forms part of a wide-ranging enforcement push that has changed visa and removal practices across the United States.

The cancellations reflect a variety of offenses. Officials say about 16,000 revocations were associated with driving under the influence (DUI), roughly 12,000 with assault, and around 8,000 with theft — figures that together account for nearly half of all visa cancellations.

"These three categories account for a significant portion of this year’s visa cancellations," the State Department source said on condition of anonymity.

Launched shortly after the administration began, the enforcement campaign targets not only those without legal status but also holders of valid visas deemed to have breached U.S. laws or policy standards.

In August, the department disclosed that more than 6,000 student visas were revoked for overstays and other legal violations, including a subset reportedly linked to alleged "support for terrorism." Federal officials have also tightened social media screening and raised vetting requirements for visa applicants in recent months.

Separately, at least six individuals had visas rescinded last month over controversial social media posts concerning the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the department confirmed.

Senior administration officials have stressed that visa restrictions will continue to be applied to conduct viewed as inconsistent with U.S. foreign-policy interests, including public expressions of support for Palestine or criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Diplomats overseas have been instructed to scrutinise applicants for potential political activity, a directive that critics say risks conflating law enforcement with political suppression and raises serious free-speech and due-process concerns.

The large number of cancellations underscores a sustained hardline posture by the administration, blending domestic law-enforcement objectives with international policy priorities and signalling continued strict oversight of foreign visitors and temporary residents.
