During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, US President Donald Trump claimed to have successfully ended eight conflicts, notably the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan. Trump expressed discontent over not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for what he describes as his diplomatic achievements.
In a recorded segment, Trump noted he had played a role in resolving the long-standing war between Armenia and Azerbaijan by introducing stringent trade tariffs, prompting a peace call after 35 years of discord. He highlighted this quick resolution as an acknowledged success, even noted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump mentioned that the US effectively mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year. He asserted that his trade negotiations were pivotal in reaching an agreement. "Do I deserve credit for it? No. I've handled eight of them. India... How about India and Pakistan...?" he remarked in the meeting.
However, the Indian government has continuously dismissed any assertions of third-party mediation. New Delhi asserts that the ceasefire was negotiated directly between the military leadership of both nations, without external influence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has informed Parliament that no foreign authority urged India to discontinue Operation Sindoor, the military campaign aimed at dismantling terrorist bases in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Operation Sindoor initiated on May 7, following a lethal attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 civilian fatalities. After four days of significant cross-border exchanges of drone and missile strikes, both nations reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10.
Despite Trump's repeated assertions—more than 70 times since May—that he played a role in resolving the conflict, India's official position remains unchanged: the ceasefire was the product of direct military discussions between India and Pakistan, devoid of US involvement.
This dispute over perceived credit underscores the delicate dynamics of geopolitics in South Asia and highlights India's emphasis on independently managing its conflicts.
