Royal Ploughing Ritual Marks Important Agricultural Tradition in Thailand

Post by : Shakul

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives conducted a significant blessing ceremony on May 6, 2026, in preparation for Thailand's Royal Ploughing Ceremony, a vital cultural and agricultural event. The ritual aimed to invoke prosperity, favorable weather, and good fortune as the farming season approaches.

Held at the Ministry's Bangkok headquarters, the ceremony was overseen by Permanent Secretary Mr. Winairoj Sapsongsook, who is slated to assume the role of Phraya Raek Na, or Chief Ploughman, during the main ceremony. Senior officials, ceremonial aides, and other key representatives participated in the rites.

Participants honored ancestral monarchs, sacred spirits, and Phra Phirun, the rain deity depicted riding a Naga serpent, along with several holy items on the premises. Important locations such as the Buddha shrine, spirit houses, and ancestral altars were visited during the rituals, emphasizing a deep cultural connection to agriculture and spirituality.

Traditional offerings including garlands, incense, candles, and flowers formed part of the beautiful ceremony. Led by Chief Brahmin priest Phra Maha Ratchakru Phithi Sri Wisutthikun, the rituals included blessings with holy water and sacred bael leaves. Officials underscored the significance of this spiritual preparation leading up to the national Royal Ploughing Ceremony.

The Royal Household has set May 12, 2026, for a related Buddhist prayer ceremony at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This day also coincides with Farmers’ Day in Thailand, honoring the agricultural community.

Scheduled for May 13 at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony serves as a ritual that forecasts weather patterns, rainfall, and crop yields for the upcoming agricultural year. Steeped in history, this celebrated event captures public attention each year.

Sacred oxen will be presented various foods, such as rice, corn, beans, and liquor, with their choices believed to predict economic and agricultural conditions. For instance, selecting rice or corn is viewed as a positive sign for harvest abundance, while water and grass indicate ample rainfall and robust agricultural output.

Additionally, the Chief Ploughman engages in a traditional cloth selection ceremony with textiles of various lengths, reflecting ancient beliefs about future rainfall and agricultural outcomes across Thailand. Officials emphasize that these enduring symbolic rituals are integral to the country’s agricultural legacy and cultural identity.

The Ministry revealed that this year’s ceremony will feature over 5,000 kilograms of royal rice varieties, including jasmine and glutinous rice. Authorities remarked that the Royal Ploughing Ceremony highlights the profound relationship between Thai culture, agriculture, spirituality, and national traditions.
