Tragic Death of Indian-Origin Man After Extended Wait in Canadian ER

Post by : Mina Rahman

A 44-year-old Indian-origin man tragically succumbed to a suspected cardiac arrest following an extended wait at a hospital in Edmonton, Canada, igniting concerns over emergency healthcare protocols.

Prashant Sreekumar, a father of three, was rushed to the hospital on December 22 after suffering severe chest pain while at work. A client transported him to the emergency department, where he registered and awaited care.

According to family members, Prashant endured excruciating pain and repeatedly communicated his distress to hospital personnel. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, who arrived shortly after, noted that his son described the pain as intolerable.

Medical staff performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) to evaluate his heart condition. The family was informed that the results showed no immediate concerns, and Prashant was instructed to stay in the waiting area.

As time passed, his condition deteriorated. Reports indicate his blood pressure continued to escalate, and he was provided Tylenol for pain relief. Nevertheless, no urgent intervention occurred, leaving him in the emergency room for more than eight hours.

After several hours, Prashant was finally called into the treatment area. Moments after sitting down, he stood up, grasped his chest, and collapsed.

Medical staff rushed to his aid and attempted resuscitation, but unfortunately, he could not be revived. He was pronounced dead due to an apparent cardiac arrest.

Prashant Sreekumar leaves behind his wife and three children, aged three, 10, and 14.

The healthcare organization operating the hospital expressed condolences to the family and confirmed that the incident is currently under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Officials stated that patient safety remains a top priority, but they declined to provide specific details while the investigation is in progress.

This incident has reignited discussions about emergency room wait times and the efficacy of emergency care systems across Canada.
